Fischli&Weiss
The Way Things Go (1987) conveys the feeling of a sigh of resignation, a piece of hopeless wisdom that punctuates a narrative of complaint. By saying « That's the way things go », we are surrendering to fate. It is a stole acceptance of the way of the world.

The work is not intended to be a representation, but rather a video recording of matter in motion under the effects of gravity. Within such an empirically configured order, evidence is essential. Historic scientific precedents dictate that facts emerge only from proof based upon a proposed theory, and that without such proof there can be no facts.

What emerges is a fantasy of a work/studio space that functions without assistance, workers, or, most important, without artists. Yet, lest Der Lauf der Dinge be read as an apocalyptic vision of a future without workers – a Taylorist's dream-world – Fischli and Weiss create a machine that refuses to make an object, or generate energy, or facilitate communication, or do anything that machines are supposed to do.
